Hemisferium Lunar Calendar & Tidal Abacus on Stand (Pack of 1)
This beautiful replica consists of a Perpetual Moon phases calendar on the front face and a Tidal Abacus or computer on the back.
This instrument was conceived to address the need to predict the time of tidal changes. It draws on the intimate of the Moon and the Earth which influences the tides.
Knowledge of the lunar phases has been of great importance for many cultures - calendars, religious festivals, and agricultural practices were all set according to the moon.
The Tidal Abacus, or calculator, is employed to predict the time of tidal changes. The tides, with their constant change in the water level, greatly affect navigation both in harbours and for fishing.
To develop this instrument, various pieces from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries including astronomical compendiums, volvelles and abacuses were studied in detail.
This beautiful historical piece is displayed on an elegant wooden stand and will make an eye-catching decorative centrepiece.
